Fracture of the cricoid cartilage after Sellick's manoeuvre.

We report a case of fracture of the cricoid cartilage associated with cricoid pressure during rapid sequence tracheal intubation in a patient with status asthmaticus. This patient had a history of laryngeal trauma 48 yr previously. Fracture of the cricoid cartilage has not been reported previously after cricoid pressure.

Prophylactic Effects of Lidocaine or Beclomethasone Spray on Post-Operative sore Throat and Cough after Orotracheal Intubation

Introduction: Post-operative sore throat and cough are common complications of endotracheal intubation. These conditions may be very distressing for the patient and may lead to unpleasant memories. This study was performed in order to determine whether beclomethasone and lidocaine spray could reduce the frequency of post-operative sore throat and hoarseness after tracheal extubation.  Materials...

Cricoid pressure in emergency department rapid sequence tracheal intubations: a risk-benefit analysis.

Cricoid pressure is considered an integral part of patient safety in rapid sequence tracheal intubation and emergency airway management. Cricoid pressure is applied to prevent the regurgitation of gastric contents into the pharynx and subsequent aspiration into the pulmonary tree. This review analyzes the published evidence supporting cricoid pressure, along with potential problems, including i...

British Journal of Anaesthesia 1998; 80: 270–274 Tracheal intubation in trauma

Sir,—The article by Nolan and Parr1 depicted in-line cervical stabilization and cricoid pressure during tracheal intubation in the trauma patient (fig. 2). In figure 2, in-line cervical stabilization is demonstrated as if it were a single-handed technique. It is accepted practice, however, to perform this manoeuvre as a double-handed technique (although we are sure this is the effect of the lin...

Cricoid pressure impedes placement of the laryngeal mask airway and subsequent tracheal intubation through the mask.

We have studied 40 patients to see if cricoid pressure affects the success rate of ventilation through, and the position of, the laryngeal mask and subsequent fiberscope-aided tracheal intubation. Adequate ventilation of the lungs was produced through the laryngeal mask in 19 of 20 patients in the control group, but in only 10 of 20 patients in the cricoid pressure group (P < 0.002). The laryng...
